Panel will discuss use of Native American imagery in sports

A symposium held at the National Museum of the American Indian on Thursday will focus on the use of stereotypical imagery in American sports. Entitled “Racist Stereotypes and Cultural Appropriation in American Sports,” the panel will include talks by college professors, sports commentators, and representatives from Native American tribes. The issue has long been debated, with many teams changing names, mascots, and mottoes to omit offensive cultural stereotypes, but many others still remain. The Washington Redskins, for example, have been involved in high profile legal cases with Native American groups over a term some find incredibly offensive. Others argue that the use of Native American imagery is reverent and meant as a sign of respect.

The Smithsonian-run museum is dedicated to preserving the true culture and history of Native Americans.
