Since October, Occupy protestors have maintained grounds in the District’s Freedom Plaza and plans to remain for the next two months. A previous permit for the protestors was set to expire on Tuesday, but the National Park Service Officials report they are finalizing a permit to extend the protestors’ demonstrations through April 29. Earlier in the month, the U.S. Park Police emptied the Occupy D.C. encampment in the District’s McPherson Square.
Anthony Vanfossen, the Freedom Plaza organizer, reported that protestors are abiding by park service regulations, meaning they are not sleeping in the plaza and are maintaining tents as a symbolic gesture. The Occupy Washington D.C. protest, previously known as October 2011 Stop the Machine, began on the 10th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan. The Occupy movement is nationwide.
