The family of a Washington Navy Yard shooting victim has created a scholarship to honor his memory.

The family of Gerald Read will award a scholarship to an Eagle Scout every year who graduates from Clearfield Area High School.

Read, 58, became an Eagle Scout in 1973.  He was one of the 12 victims fatally shot at the Washington Navy Yard on September 16.

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time next year in the amount of $1,000.  As the years progress Read’s family hopes an increase in donations will allot for an increase in the amount of the scholarship.
