The NHL began the process of turning the Nationals Park baseball stadium into an ice rink for the Winter Classic Monday. This includes a truck carry a 53-foot refrigeration unit, 10 trailer loads of boards, glass, goal frames and more, says Dean Matsuzaki, senior vice president for NHL events. Next week, they will begin to build the ice, by spraying thin layers of water over the rink. The ice temperature should remain at about 22 degrees. They rink will require about 20,000 gallons of water. The 2014 NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic will take place on January 1 at 1 p.m. between the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks.
