Lawyer for man who broke into White House asks judge for his release

On Friday, a lawyer asked for “time served” for his client, an Army veteran who jumped the fence and ran inside the White House before security apprehended him. Although the sentence normally ranges from one to two years for this crime, the lawyer for Omar Gonzalez asked for leniency because his client, who has been in prison since September 19, served in Iraq from 2006-2008 and has PTSD. Prosecutors believe that Gonzalez’s sentence should remain nearly two years, arguing that the Army vet knew about the severity of his PTSD but did not seek consistent treatment. Gonzalez was carrying a folding knife when he entered the White House and investigators found more weapons in his car. The Obamas were not inside the executive office at the time of the break-in.
