LaRuby May wins Ward 8 council seat

Former campaign staffer LaRuby May has won the D.C. Council seat representing Ward 8 (that was previously held by Marion Barry), based on an unofficial final tally. The D.C. Board of Elections announced the results Friday night, showing that May received 26.76 percent of the vote. She defeated opponent Trayon White by just 80 votes. White received 25.67 percent of the vote and says that he plans on asking for a recount. May’s win represents a huge victory for D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Another former mayoral aide, Brandon Todd, just recently won the Ward 4 seat. That gives Bowser two new allies on the 13-member council. The elections board will hold a public audit of the votes Monday. The votes are going to be certified on May 14, then May and Todd will be sworn into office.
