Infant found alone in Occupy D.C. camp

On Wednesday morning at the Occupy D.C. encampment in McPherson Square, an infant was found alone and crying in a tent. Authorities arrived to investigate around 10:30 a.m and found the baby girl was unharmed and was placed in the District’s care. A half hour after D.C. Fire and EMS workers arrived, a man returned to the grounds and identified himself as the father of the infant.

The man was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree cruelty to a child. According to the Sgt. David Schlosser, a U.S. Park Police spokesman, the child is fine and is currently with the city’s child protective services department. A retired school teacher of Prince George’s County, Kelly Canavan, who was living at the camp said, “None of us knew this person. It was a despicable, atrocious thing to do. Everyone here is revolted by the behavior.”
