Giant Food celebrating its 78th year


Giant Food is giving away free birthday cakes in celebration of its 78th anniversary today at all 170 of their locations. The cake cutting and birthday celebrations will begin at 3 p.m. and last until 8 p.m. Founded in 1936 at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Park Road, Nehemiah Meir Cohen and Samuel Lehrman opened the first supermarket in Washington, D.C. Giant Foods employs about 22,000 people and 159 of the stores house full-service pharmacies. The grocery chain remains successful in the District and surrounding areas to this day.
