Frager’s Hardware may be razed

A total demolition of what’s left of the burned down property may occur in an attempt to rebuild Capitol Hill’s iconic Frager’s Hardware.

Raze applications were filed on July 24 for the two buildings that make up Fragers. The raze would clear about 90 percent of the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Ave.

Although the buildings are not protected by landmark status, they are located within the Capitol Hill Historic District, which means the raze applications will have to be approved by the Historic Preservation Review Board.

The earliest the applications can be reviewed is September.

The hardware store, which is 93-years-old, was destroyed in June by an accidental fire caused by discarded smoking material.
