A former D.C. Council candidate has been charged with lying about how much money his campaign received from a businessman. Jeff Smith was charged Monday with making a false statement to the District of Columbia’s campaign finance office. Smith ran against D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham in a 2010 Democratic primary and lost. Court documents don’t show how much money Smith received from businessman Jeffrey Thompson, who admitted to giving $668,000 in illicit funds into Gray’s campaign that same year. Another former council candidate, Kelvin Robinson, pleaded guilty this month to lying about money he received from Thompson.
