The re-registration process for firearms in the District of Columbia began with the New Year.
The process began January 1 and approximately 30,000 guns, registered before 2011, require a renewal.
Depending on the firearm owner’s birth date, the renewals will be “staggered through December 2015.”
A law was passed in 2008 requiring gun owners to re-register their firearms every three years. The law is being disputed in court, but the case is still open.
The re-registration fee will be a flat rate of $48, despite how many weapons the person owns. Owners will also be required to take fingerprints and pass a background check.
