Mayor Vincent Gray signed a bill that will ban plastic foam food containers in the District of Columbia. The District will join cities including Seattle and San Francisco who have already banned plastic foam for environmental reasons. The ban will take effect in 2016. Four years ago, the District placed a 5-cent fee on plastic bags, in order to reduce the number of discarded bags that end up in the Anacostia River.
