Data confirms few DC students attend assigned schools

Data released by the District of Columbia shows that an insufficient amount of students in the city attend their assigned public schools. Roughly one quarter of students in D.C. attend their assigned schools while the majority of students are spreading out to schools across the city. D.C. students living in one school boundary attend 64 different schools. In other neighborhoods, the displacement is much larger. Data released by the deputy mayor for education shows that students living in east of the Anacostia River in wards 7 and 8 tend to travel much farther for schools than students in other parts of the city. Because students are traveling to different schools, the city’s efforts to overhaul school boundaries is difficult.
