D.C. homicides increase in 2013

The number of homicides reported in the District of Columbia is higher than it was this time last year.

Mayor Vincent Gray explained his disappointment Wednesday that the number has gone up and not down.

At this same time last year there were 82 homicides in the District of Columbia.  As of Wednesday there have been 103 in 2013.  This total includes the 12 that were killed in the tragic Navy Yard shooting in September, meaning that even without the mass shooting the numbers would still have increased from 2012.

The year 2012 was the first time in around fifty years that the number of homicides was less than 100.
