Chief librarian steps down

The chief librarian of the D.C. Public Library system has announced her retirement for later this year.

Ginnie Cooper will continue to lead the libraries for a few months until a successor is found. Cooper will also oversee the renovation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.

Cooper arose in 2006 and immediately became known for transforming D.C. libraries. She led a major renovation and construction project for 14 neighboring libraries. Since Cooper’s influence, the number of books checked out has tripled. The number of computers in the library has also increased from100 to over 1,000.
