Car barn to be built for streetcar line

The D.C. streetcar project continues as a new car barn is to be erected at Benning Road and 26th Street NE.

The tracks for the streetcar line will be built in front of Spingarn High School in NE D.C. Afterwards, the construction for the car barn will begin and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2014. A temporary tent will be put in place until it is finished.

The streetcar facility will act as a command center for the H Street/Benning Road line where cars will be inspected, cleaned, and repaired.

Some residents are unhappy about the line being built in their back yard, but DDOT officials state that there will be a wall placed on the western side of the car barn to limit noise.

Three streetcars are currently being tested and will be delivered to the H Street corridor in the coming months. Officials anticipate the opening of the line to begin by the end of the year.
