Capitol Hill attack raises safety concerns in D.C.

After an attack in the Southeast neighborhood near Capitol Hill left a neighborhood resident clinging to life with brain injuries, reineforcements are again, after a spike in robberies late last year, confronting an increase in robberies and assaults in the area. The recent spike in robberies is similar to the robberies that occurred last year, the majority between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m., according to 1st District police Camander, Daniel P. Hickson, on Monday at a news conference.

The attack on Saturday, in which 29-year-old analyst Thomas C. Maslin was beaten in the head and found on a front porch three doors down from the home of a U.S. senator, stood out for its intensity. Hickson said there were three robberies in the area this month that were violent, involving punches in the face, but “nothing remotely like what happened Saturday.” Armed and unarmed robberies are up in central Capitol Hill this year. Hickson said he is working on initiating more patrols and other measures to address the problem.
