Ambulance breaks down while transporting wounded suspect

An ambulance carrying a wounded carjacking suspect broke down on its way to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. Twenty-four-year-old Nathaniel McRae was shot by D.C. police after he vacated a stolen vehicle along Barnaby Street. A police officer was also injured during the pursuit. McRae was pronounced dead at the hospital after being transferred to a second ambulance.

McRae was being transported by D.C. fire and EMS to the hospital when the ambulance’s engine light came on, causing the ambulance to be shut off. Within minutes, a second ambulance arrived to transport McRae.

It is unclear whether the ambulance delay caused McRae’s death. However, McRae was already suffering from life-threatening injuries when he was shot on Barnaby Street.
