2,000 to join suicide prevention walk

2,000 to join suicide prevention walk

An overnight walk will take place through the nation’s capital to raise awareness about suicide. The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention will be leading the walk.

Two thousand people are expected to attend the walk on Saturday evening at George Washington University. An opening ceremony will commence the walk at 6:30 p.m. The Out of Darkness Walk begins at 7:30 p.m.

Participants will walk 16.7 miles. The goal of the walk is to raise money and awareness to develop suicide prevention programs and reduce stigmas associated with mental illnesses. According to The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, 1 million people make suicide attempts each year and around 38,000 die of suicide.

The walk will end at sunrise on Sunday morning at George Washington University.
