Virginia – Voting rights expansion may include locked up sex offenders

More than 100 sex offenders who’ve completed their sentence, but were deemed too dangerous to release, could have their voting rights restored after Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe ordered the restoration of voting rights to ex-felons. According to The Washington Post, 176 of the 370 residents at the Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation meet the criteria for voting rights restoration. One database showed 132 had been restored. The governor’s executive order does not cover the facilities residents because it specifically excludes anyone under supervised release, McAuliffe spokeswoman Christina Nuckols said. Nottoway County Commonwealth’s Attorney Terry Royall said the residents at the center are not under “supervised release” and that the order does not exclude civilly committed people.
