Va. grandmother to be sentenced

A woman from Fairfax County is expected to be sentenced Friday in the first-degree murder of her 2-year-old granddaughter. Carmela dela Rosa, 50, faces up to 35 years in prison for throwing her granddaughter, Angelyn Ogdoc, off a mall walkway to her death. The murder occurred at the Tyson’s Corner shopping center.

The killing was caught on mall surveillance cameras, and dela Rosa later admitted she had planned it. Prosecuting attorney Ray Morrogh argued that dela Rosa was angry her daughter had gotten pregnant out of wedlock. Dela Rosa’s public defender, Dawn Butorac, said that her client suffered from crippling depression, and was not guilty by reason of insanity.
