VA derailment cleanup to last until June
On March 23rd, a 64-car, two-locomotive train was headed from Hamlet, NC to Russell, KY, when 18 of the cars derailed near the town of Haysi. Around 1,100 gallons of propionic acid leaked from one of the cars, but did not flow into the nearby Russell Fork River.
The cleanup at the site near southwest, VA is not expected to be completed until early June. The cleanup includes moving nitrogen fertilizer off of 5 cars as well as dismantling the cars. Work involving the acid will be cleaned up by the end of the week.
