New visiting rules put in place for Virginia inmates

In an attempt to upgrade security the Virginia Department of Corrections is implementing new rules for inmates’ visitations.

The changes were enforced as of December 1 for visits planned following the New Year.

Virginia has close to 30,000 inmates housed in institutions across the state, drawing in about 73,000 visitors.

Lisa Kinney, the department’s spokeswoman, says that those approved for visitation in 2013 will not have to reapply until 2016.

Visitors can apply in writing or online and the headquarters in Richmond will process the applications.
