First nuclear powered aircraft carrier returns to Norfolk

The U.S.S. Enterprise, first deployed during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, returned to port in Norfolk, VA for retirement on Sunday. The world’s first ever nuclear powered aircraft carrier has played a crucial role in every major conflict since it first deployed, and carries a sentimental value to all those who served aboard her, from the Cold War to the war in Afghanistan. Navy sailors collected memorabilia and took photos Sunday. In December the ship will be officially retired after 25 deployments. Its nuclear reactors will be dismantled and the ship will eventually be scrapped in Washington state.
