Last year, a Woodson High School student in Fairfax County, Nick Stuban, killed himself while undergoing disciplinary proceedings from the school. Stuban’s father, Steven Stuban, says that he didn’t know his son was in trouble until he was expelled from the school and the school has been heavily criticized by parents regarding the incident.
Virginia’s General Assembly is set to consider a number of bills that will require parental notification before any serious action is taken against a student. Steven Stuban says, “Education involves a partnership between students and parents and we need to have parents involved in every aspect of a student’s education.” If bills are approved, parents will have the opportunity to get involved before any serious actions are taken against their children.
