Top player at Notre Dame leaves school, coach comments

Jerian Grant, one of the top basketball players at Notre Dame, announced Sunday that due to academic troubles he would not be re-enrolling at the school next semester. Coach Mike Brey had known about Grant’s departure during Saturday’s game against Ohio State, but said that he “tried not to think about it much.”

In a teleconference, Brey added: “I think it hit me more afterwards, especially walking out of the arena. I just kind of said, ‘Coach your team. This is your team. Obviously it’s going to change, but when it changes, then deal with it.'”

Grant said in a statement on Sunday that he takes responsibility for his “lack of good judgment and the poor decision,” and Brey said that Grant “was treated like any other student, and other student-athlete.”

“One thing I want to make clear about Jerian: I love Jerian Grant and I’m really confident I will coach him again,” Brey said. “As a teacher, you’re about helping kids back on track and learning from things.”
