Slim Purchases Mexican Soccer Teams
Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has purchased a part of two of Mexico’s first division soccer teams. Slim is well known for owning a number of different businesses in the country, including banks, chain stores, and telephone and internet companies. He purchased 30 percent of shares in the Leon and Pachuca teams.
Owners of the Mexican first division clubs have now organized a meeting to discuss whether one company can own more than one team. Because each team is given one vote in the Mexican Football Federation, Slim would be given more power in the Federation. If the meeting votes against multi-ownership, Slim will not be forced to sell one of his teams, but he will be prevented from purchasing more teams in the future.
