Serena Williams twists ankle, withdraws from Brisbane

In a major setback for her Australian Open preparations, athlete Serena Williams injured her left ankle at the Brisbane International. Williams was serving for a match against Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski when she twisted her ankle and fell to the court. Williams took several minutes to rest and then had the ankle re-taped before resuming the match. She drew a narrow win before leaving the court to be seen by a doctor.

Tests confirmed the ankle was sprained, and Williams withdrew from the Brisbane International. “I’m going to take a couple of days off—not too many—and see how I feel,” Williams said in a statement. “I’m still hopeful of playing the Australian Open.” Williams missed the 2011 Australian Open due to injuries that kept her sidelined for about a year.
