United States swimmer Ryan Lochte turned his highly-anticipated duel with Michael Phelps into a blowout, pulling away to win the first gold medal for his country in the Olympic 400-meter individual medley by more than three seconds on Saturday night. Phelps got fourth place, and didn’t receive a medal. “It was just a crappy race,” said Phelps who has won 17 Olympic medals. “I felt fine the first 200, then I don’t know. They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were better prepared than me. That’s why they’re on the medal stand.”

Climbing out of the pool with a huge grin, waving to the crowd, Lochte said, “I think I’m kind of in shock right now.” On Sunday night, Lochte, Phelps, and their American teammates Nathan Adrian and Cullen Jones, won silver in the 400-meter relay. Team USA was looking to take down the Australians, but it was Frenchman Yannick Agnel who swam exactly one second faster than Lochte in the last stretch to win gold for the French. “We just raced tough and we came up a little short,” Lochte said.
