Football great “Bubba” Smith dies at age 66

Former football star Charles Aaron “Bubba” Smith, who will be most remembered as a member of the Baltimore Colts, died Wednesday at the age of 66 from what investigators say was natural causes. Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1967 National Football League draft, went onto have a storied career, playing in two Pro Bowls and two Super Bowls as a defensive end for the Colts. Standing 6 foot 8 and weighing 280 pounds, Smith was considered one of the premier pass rushers of his time.

In 1988, Smith was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame for his collegiate career as a member of the Michigan State Spartans where he was accepted to two All-American teams and participated in the 1966 “Game of the Century” between rivals Notre Dame and Michigan State which ended in a 10-10 tie. Smith played nine seasons in the NFL for the Colts, Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers.
