College coach gives a harsh rant about his team, but doesn’t apologize

Barry Hinson, basketball coach at Southern Illinois, went on quite a rant during a postgame news conference following his team’s loss to Murray State on Tuesday. “I’ve got a bunch of mama’s boys right now,” Hinson said. “We just won’t buck up and bow our necks. We’ve got to get through that. I’m tired of coaching a guy and having him roll his eyes or put his head down or feel sorry for himself. This is big time. People lose their jobs. …Our three starting guards had one assist and seven turnovers. They must think it’s a tax credit.”

However, the only thing Hinson says he regrets about the rant, was that he called out one individual: Marcus Fillyaw. He called Fillyaw “PG-rated” and “absolutely awful.”

“I stand by everything I said last night, but I apologize for singling out one individual. I should be chastised for that,” Hinson told USA TODAY Sports. “Let’s get something straight: I didn’t grab anybody, I didn’t hit anybody. I didn’t even use profanity. I just want my kids to play harder. You’ve gotta be able to criticize in this society. I want what’s best for my players.
