On Wednesday, in a Santa Clara County Superior courtroom, linebacker Aldon Smith, of the San Francisco 49ers, plead no contest to three felony counts of possessing illegal firearms and a misdemeanor DUI charge. The court set Smith’s sentencing hearing for July 25, 2014—less than two weeks before the 49ers’ first preseason game. Smith has recently placed himself under the media spotlight, not for football, but for making a fake bomb threat at LAX in April.
