According to a nationwide poll conducted by CNN immediately following Thursday’s vice presidential debate, forty-eight percent of voters who watched the debate think that Paul Ryan was the victor, while forty-four percent believe Joe Biden came out on top. However, all of this data has a five percent margin of error, according to CNN. This means that if adjusted for errors or discrepancies, either candidate could gain or lose up to five percentage points. CBS also released a poll regarding who performed better in the debate according to viewers. The results were notably different, with fifty percent voting that Biden won while only thirty one percent voted in favor of Ryan. According the CBS manager of surveys Jen De Pinto, this difference was due to the two news agencies interviewing “different samples of voters.” CBS interviewed only uncommitted voters while CNN interviewed both types of voters, committed and uncommitted. “The two candidates are vying for an ever shrinking sliver of the electorate,” said CBS director of surveys Sarah Dutton, “uncommitted or persuadable voters.”
