Todd Akin defies calls to dropout of Senate race

After incendiary comments about women, rape, and pregnancy, Republican Representative Todd Akin of Missouri was allowed a state deadline pass on Tuesday, defiantly staying in the race to remove Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, despite mounting calls to withdraw from his fellow party members. Under Missouri law, Akin, who said he has no intention to drop out, would now need to get a court order to pull out of the race as he waited beyond the 5 p.m. deadline. The representative would also be required to pay for any necessary reprinting of ballots.

Speaking with conservative radio host Dana Loesch, Akin said, “I’m in this race for the long haul and we’re going to win it.”

On Sunday, in an effort to explain his stance on abortion, he explained how the female body could somehow block an unwanted pregnancy in cases of “legitimate rape.” He said, “It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.” As of now, Akin remains in the race for Senate against Democratic incumbent McCaskill.
