Obama wins healthcare case; Supreme Court upholds all parts of bill

In a 5-4 ruling, justices at the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. upheld all parts of Obamacare, which is President Barack Obama’s signature health care law, saying the individual health-insurance mandate is permissible under Congress’s taxing authority, a major White House victory. The potentially game-changing ruling comes less than five months before the general elections on November 6. The ruling will help redefine the power of the national government and affect the health-care choices of millions of Americans.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. agreed with the majority in voting to uphold Obama’s historic domestic law, which requires all Americans to have health insurance by 2014. Passage of the legislation by the Democratic-controlled Congress in 2010 capped decades of efforts to implement a national program of health care. The legislation is expected to ultimately extend health-care coverage to more than 30 million Americans who do not currently have it. Republicans in Congress and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney have declared to try and repeal the measure after November’s general elections.
