Results from election night: victories for McAuliffe, de Blasio and Christie

Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey, Terry McAuliffe of Virginia and Bill de Blasio of New York were the big victors from last night’s election, bringing some important details about the voting tendencies to light. It was no surprise that Gov. Chris Christie won re-election in New Jersey, as his challenger, Barbara Buono, was not well-known, and many expect Christie to be a prominent figure in the 2016 presidential election. Christie was able to win the votes of traditionally democratic voters, and he won moderates by more than 20 points and independents by more than 30 points.

Kerry McAuliffe won the governor’s race in Virginia by a slim margin, but it was an important election for the swing state. McAuliffe proved that opponent Ken Cuccinelli, a Tea Party Republican, was too extreme for many of the state’s voters. Many Republicans also have mixed feelings about the Tea Party, because they blame them for fueling the government shutdown.

Bill de Blasio’s mayoral victory marked a time of change for New York, as the Democrat vows to reverse many of Michael Bloomberg’s actions, and work on issues like the wide gap between the rich and poor.
