U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. is responding well to treatment for a bipolar disorder, according to the Mayo Clinic on Monday. The clinic, based in Rochester, Minnesota, said Jackson is regaining his strength, but would give no further information on his condition.

The congressman’s office announced in July that he was “receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for a mood disorder.” Less than a month later, his office said he was undergoing an “extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues” at the Mayo Clinic. Earlier this month, Sandi, Jackson’s wife, said her husband had “good days and bad days” and doctors were increasing his depression medication to “therapeutic levels.” The Illinois Democrat, son of Reverend Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader, has not been on Capitol Hill since late May.
