Obama aims to turn attention back to immigration

President Obama gave a speech Thursday morning, urging government leaders to turn their attention back to the “broken immigration system.” He added in his speech: “We’ve kicked this particular can down the road for too long.”

Immigration reform hasn’t been a prominent issue since June, when the Senate passed a bill that failed to move forward in the House. House leaders say that a series of smaller bills would be preferred to the one proposed by Senate, but Obama restated his support for the bill on Thursday. “It’s good for our economy, it’s good for our security, it’s good for our people and we should do it this year,” he said.

However, there is strong reason to believe that the opinions of Republicans in the House have not changed, and a senior House GOP leadership aide commented to CNN: “There is a sincere desire to work on this issue, but there’s also very little good will after the President spent the last two months refusing to work with us.”
