Obama’s proposes merges, streamline of government agencies

On Friday, President Barack Obama proposed the merging of six agencies that focus on trade and commerce into one new department. The president reportedly says that he would use the authority to merge the Commerce Department’s core business functions with five smaller agencies which include: the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Export-Import Bank, the Small Business Administration, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and the Trade and Development Agency.

Obama says, “In this case, six isn’t better than one. It produces redundancy and inefficiency. With the authority I am requesting today, we could consolidate them all into one department with one website, one phone number, and one mission.” Brenan Buck, a spokesman for Republican House Speaker John Boehner said “Eliminating duplicative programs and making the federal government more simple, streamlined, and business-friendly is always an idea worth exploring.” Officials estimated the cost savings of the merger and said it would save $3 billion over a decade.
