Mitt Romney chooses Congressman Paul Ryan for Vice President

Former Governor Mitt Romney reset the 2012 presidential race as a battle over the size and scope of the federal government on Saturday after he announced Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate. Ryan is the architect of the extreme GOP plan, The Path to Prosperity, to slash spending, overhaul Medicare, and raise taxes on middle-class families for an additional $250,000 in tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.

Romney chose the 42-year-old Republican congressman over several contenders considered safer bets. The former governor of Massachusetts announced his selection in a theatrical fashion on Saturday morning in Norfolk, Virginia, with each of the men stepping down the deck of the USS Wisconsin, a World War II-era battleship named for Ryan’s homes state, to the soundtrack of the movie “Air Force One.” Romney praised his new partner as a servant of America’s working classes and a citizen of integrity, character, and vision. “He’s never been content to simply curse the darkness,” Romney said of his chosen vice president. “He’d rather light candles.”
