Geithner informs Obama he will remain Treasury secretary

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner informed President Barack Obama Friday morning that he intends to keep his post through fall of 2012. Geithner’s decision will keep him on as Obama’s longest-serving economic adviser following continued economic downturn and the first-ever U.S. credit downgrade. Geithner’s decision comes only days after many speculated that the Treasury secretary would step down from his position following the recent national debt crisis. Geithner, who will soon turn 50, is one of the architects behind the 2008 Wall Street bailout and has faced harsh criticism during his time as Treasury secretary.
