Bells in Tucson rang 19 times yesterday morning for each of the victims that were a part of the devastating shooting on January 8, 2011. The evening was illuminated by a candlelight vigil and was attended by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz), who survived a shot to the head,  her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, and others. Chief of Staff Pia Carusone said, “Congresswoman Giffords wanted to be back in Tucson for this very emotional weekend.”

The Congress on Your Corner event was organized by Gabe Zimmerman, 30, who was killed on that day. Of the 19 victims, six died.  John Roll, 63, a federal judge; Phyllis Schneck, 79; Dorothy Morris, 76; Dorwan Stoddard, 76; and Christina Taylor-Green, 9, were among the dead. A nurse, Nancy Bowman, who had just stepped away from the crowd to the Safeway seconds before the massacre said, “It makes you appreciate every single day.” According to a statement, President Obama called Giffords and referred to her as  “an inspiration to his family and Americans across the country.”
