Debate begins on immigration bill

The Senate voted to debate a bill to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship on Tuesday. The bill gained a powerful majority support from the Senate in an 82-15 vote. The bill is expected to pass in the Senate, even though some conservatives strongly oppose it.

President Obama explained the bill will increase funds used to secure the border between Mexico and the United States. It will also obligate immigrants without documents to participate in a 13 year path to citizenship. He said, “You have to pass background checks, you have to learn English, you have to pay taxes and a penalty and then you have to go to the back of the line behind everybody who has done things the right way and have tried to come here legally.”
