With the South Carolina primary approaching on January 21, conservative activists have increase attacks on the front-runner Mitt Romney in order to take the Republican presidential nomination. The Republicans’ dilemma is in finding a candidate from to stand behind given the variety of choices. Tea party groups desire a small government conservative, while evangelical Christians want a social conservative.
Undecided conservatives are hoping for a standout candidate to emerge as they prepare for this summer’s GOP convention. Garlow, a prominent backer of Newt Gingrich said, “I’m not in panic mode, at least not yet. There is still time, although the fuse is short.” On Friday, 150 evangelical leaders will gather in Texas to discuss their next move. There will be a convention in Myrtle Beach, S.C., this weekend which will include 500 tea party activists in attendance.
