National Football League team medical staffs were asked to participate in surprise federal drug inspections Sunday. They are part of an ongoing investigation into prescription drug abuse in the NFL. The proceedings required bag searches and questioning of team doctors. Federal investigators with the Drug Enforcement Administration suspect team doctors dispense certain drugs illegally in order to keep players on the field longer. This practice would be in violation of the Controlled Substances Act. A class-action lawsuit was filed in May by more than 1,300 retired NFL players who allege that teams regularly and illegaly administer pain killers and sleep aids. Those drugs mentioned in the suit include the addictive narcotics Percocet and Percodan, sleep aid Ambien and the non-addictive painkiller Toradol.
