Victim’s family files hate crimes suit

James Craig Anderson, a 48-year-old African-American man, was murdered on June 26 at the hands of several white teenagers. A lawsuit has been filed by Anderson’s sister, mother and two brothers, which seeks a jury trial and damages for all those involved in the attack. Two of the teens face criminal charges for their actions, but there were seven in the group, and the suit alleges that the others acted as lookouts to prevent Anderson’s escape.

A videotape obtained by CNN shows the teens pulling into a parking lot and approaching Anderson. Though the beating itself occurred off-camera, some of the individuals can be heard yelling racial epithets. After Anderson attempts to rise, and staggers in view of the camera, he is struck by a truck driven by one of the teens.
