Five children were in the car that plunged into a nearly frozen pond in Minnesota on Thursday; two of them died the other three remain in critical condition. Zenavia Rennie,5, died on the scene while Alarious Coleman-Guerrido, 7, passed away later in the day.

Marion Guerrido, 23, was driving the vehicle when it ran off the road and into the water. She was able to escape the car, and suffered no major injuries. Jessica Ressler, a witness, told KARE that Guerrido “was screaming [but]we could not hear what she was saying.”  Lt. Eric Roeske said that emergency personnel tried to rescue the children as quickly as possible, but the car had already sunk fairly deep. The frigid water temperatures also made it difficult for rescue crews to act quickly.

On Friday, police announced that Marion Guerrido did not have a valid driver’s license, but only had a learner’s permit. Because she did not have a licensed driver with her, she should not have been behind the wheel at all.

John Sedey, director of Odyssey Academy charter school where the children attended, said the situation was “devastating.” “It doesn’t get worse than this.”
