A 3-year-old boy went rummaging through his mother’s purse, found a handgun and wounded both his parents. The incident happened at an America’s Best Value Inn in Albuquerque, on Saturday. The toddler attempted to reach for an iPod, but found the loaded weapon instead. The shooting was accidental. The bullet first struck his father in the behind, and then hit the right shoulder of his mother, who is currently eight months pregnant. His 2-year-old sister was present but unharmed. Both injuries are non-life threatening. Justin Reynolds and girlfriend, Monique Villescas, were getting ready to order pizza when the boy fired the gun. Reynolds then called 911 and grabbed some towels to try to stop the bleeding. The father was treated and released, while the mother was hospitalized in stable condition. Pending charges of felony criminal negligence were filed against both parents. Child care officials are taking care of the children. Spokesman for the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Jonathan Hutson stated that the shooting should serve as a cautionary tale to all parents to keep guns locked away securely.
