School Officials in LA Accused of Stealing Thousands of Textbooks

Twelve employees in Los Angeles County were accused of stealing thousands of textbooks from multiple school districts, with the plan of supplying a buyer who had paid them $200,000 in bribes. The schools that were robbed were in four different, impoverished Los Angeles school districts. The school employees were working for Corey Frederick, a Long Beach book buyer, who had recruited them for the job. The employees were receiving anywhere from $600 to $47,000 to steal the books, and then Frederick resold the books online. It was fairly common for him to even sell the textbooks back to the very school districts he stole from. Prosecutors have said that at least 7,000 textbooks were taken.

“Taking books out of the hands of public school students is intolerable—especially when school employees sell them for their own personal profit,” L.A. District Attorney, Jackie Lacey, said. Frederick was charged with 12 counts of embezzlement as well as 13 counts of bribery. The school workers, among which were two librarians, a warehouse supervisor and office workers, were charged with 12 counts of embezzlement and accepting bribes. Authorities say 12 of the 13 employees have pleaded not guilty.
