Attendees at a weekend Pumpkin Festival in Keene, New Hampshire became violent and destructive. Police in riot gear used tear gas and pepper spray to subdue young people who had begun to flip cars, throw alcohol bottles and start bonfires in the streets. Many were injured and allegedly dozens of arrests were made. Keene State College is near the town. KSC President Anne Huot insists that, while students hold some of the blame, it was visitors that arrived bent on destruction. Some reporters have commented on the disparity of media reaction to the “rowdy” crowds in New Hampshire, and the “violent” ones mentioned in less-destructive recent protests.
